Vietnam will build its first nuclear power plants, with a design capacity of 4,000 MW, at Phuoc Dinh and Vinh Hai in the southcentral province of Ninh Thuan from 2012-2014, said Vuong Huu Tan, Head of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission.
At an international seminar in Hanoi on May 8, Mr Tan said that the investment reports for these projects will be completed in 2008 and then submitted to the National Assembly.
Once operational in 2020, the plants will initially provide seven percent of Vietnam’s total electricity output.
By 2040, nuclear power will make up 25-30 percent of Vietnam’s total electricity output, according to the country’s atomic energy strategy.
Mr Tan said the National Assembly will debate the Atomic Energy Law this May to create a legal basis for the development and application of nuclear power.
It is predicted that the domestic demand for electricity will be 450.8 billion KWh by 2030, which is nine times higher than current levels.
