Vietnam taps into Halal market opportunities in Malaysia
VOV.VN - Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Malaysia in the Halal sector has been growing steadily, though challenges remain with trade imbalances and strict Islamic certification requirements.

Data from Vietnam Customs indicates that by the end of September 2025, total two-way trade between the two countries had exceeded US$12 billion, up 12.9% year-on-year. However, the trade balance was tilted toward Malaysia, with Vietnam importing US$8.17 billion (up 19.4%) and exporting only US$3.8 billion (up 1.3%), resulting in a trade deficit of US$4.29 billion.
Analyzing the Malaysian market, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Malaysia Ngo Quang Hung said the market is attractive thanks to its strong purchasing power, diverse demand, and consumer preferences similar to those in Vietnam.
However, Vietnamese exports face stiff competition from China, Thailand, and Indonesia. The biggest challenge, he noted, lies in Halal certification- a key barrier to entering this major Muslim market.
In this context, the Melaka state government, host of the Melaka International Halal Festival (MIHF) 2025 from October 16 to 19, has just established the Melaka Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH Melaka).
Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh emphasized that the council will accelerate investor approvals and Halal certification without cumbersome administrative procedures.
The move is seen as a favorable opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to overcome certification barriers and explore not only Melaka but also the broader regional Halal market.
Melaka is aiming to become a regional Halal hub, thereby opening new prospects for Vietnamese businesses.
