Vietnam sees rising exports of world’s third most expensive spice

VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 760 tonnes of cardamom and nutmeg worth US$6.7 million in the first three months of the year, marking increases of 39% in volume and 37% in value year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

Vietnamese cardamom and nutmeg have now reached over 30 countries. During the first quarter, the Netherlands, the US, and the UK emerged as the top importers, purchasing 240 tonnes, 125 tonnes, and 122 tonnes, respectively.

Throughout 2024, Vietnam shipped a total of 3,402 tonnes of these spices valued at US$27.6 million. The Netherlands led in total imports, followed by the US and Germany.

Vietnam is among the world’s leading spice exporters, particularly in pepper, cinnamon, and star anise. As of March 2023, the country had approximately 500,000 hectares dedicated to spice cultivation.

In Vietnam, cardamom grows naturally in cooler mountainous regions, particularly in the northern provinces of Cao Bang and Lao Cai.

Nutmeg, on the other hand, thrives in tropical climates and is widely cultivated in Cambodia, India, Malaysia, and southern Vietnam, where the tree is especially popular.

Vietnam is among the world’s leading spice exporters, particularly in pepper, cinnamon, and star anise. As of March 2023, the country had approximately 500,000 hectares dedicated to spice cultivation.

For over two decades, the country has held the title of the world’s largest producer and exporter of pepper. Since 2022, it has also led in cinnamon exports and ranked third in anise exports. With Vietnamese spices now available in more than 125 markets, the country stands as the world’s third-largest spice exporter.
