Vietnam pushes for closer trade and investment ties with Peru
VOV.VN - Ambassador of Vietnam to Brazil, concurrently accredited to Peru, Bui Van Nghi, made a working visit to Lima, the capital of Peru, from April 24-26 to discuss measures to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly boosting economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Peru.

During a meeting with Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister Felix Denegri Boza, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi affirmed Vietnam’s appreciation for its long-standing friendship and the rapidly developing partnership with Peru.
He also hailed the results of the third session of the Vietnam-Peru Intergovernmental Committee held in late March. Ambassador Bui emphasized that this was an important occasion for both countries to review the progress of cooperation, engage in extensive discussions, and agree on measures to ramp up bilateral relations, especially in the areas of economics, trade, and investment amidst unpredictable global developments and challenges in international trade.
Deputy Minister Boza congratulated the leadership and people of Vietnam on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the south and national reunification.
He also expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements after nearly 40 years of renovation and international integration. He reaffirmed that Peru values its partnership with Vietnam, an important partner in the Asia-Pacific region, and pledged to continue close cooperation with Vietnam to boost bilateral trade, support businesses from both countries in accessing markets, and further augment cooperation in various fields in the coming time.
Deputy Minister Denegri Boza acknowledged the growing role and increasing prestige of Vietnam in the region and globally, welcoming Vietnam's initiatives to enhance connectivity between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Latin American countries. He also suggested that Vietnam soon open a permanent diplomatic and trade representative office in Lima to help realize the potential for cooperation between the two countries, especially given that Peru is Vietnam's sixth-largest trade partner in Latin America.
Both sides recognized the positive progress in trade, with bilateral trade expanding by 6.5% in 2024. However, they noted that the total trade value of US$518 million is still modest compared to the potential and the actual needs for cooperation between the two complementary and supportive economies.
In a meeting with Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Desilu Leon Chempen, both sides discussed the situation of cooperation across a variety of fields such as economy, trade, investment, and tourism. They also accentuated the need to further promote substantial cooperation mechanisms, diversify import and export goods, and encourage businesses from both sides to increase exchanges and seek new investment opportunities.
Both sides also discussed the possibility of organizing trade promotion activities, trade fairs, and business forums to connect the business communities of both countries, as well as promoting cooperative initiatives in tourism, especially tourism with thematic focus, linking the two regions of South America and ASEAN.
During his visit to Lima, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi also attended and gave an opening speech at the Vietnam-Peru Business Forum 2025, organized by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Trade Mission in Brazil, in collaboration with the Lima Chamber of Commerce.
In his speech, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi provided an overview of Vietnam’s socio-economic development, highlighting notable achievements in economic growth, international integration, improvements in the business environment, and market-opening policies. He also analyzed the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Peru, while proposing several priority areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, and processing industries. He called on the Peruvian business community to strengthen connections and effectively explore opportunities for economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam.
This working visit by Ambassador Bui Van Nghi took place in the context of Vietnam and Peru celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations (November 14, 2024) and following the official visit of President Luong Cuong to the Republic of Peru and his participation in the APEC Economic Cooperation Forum High-Level Week in Lima.
