The Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Akira Amari, has said that Vietnam is an attractive destination for foreign investors, especially Japanese entrepreneurs.
The Japanese minister said this is because both countries share many cultural identities and Vietnam has a high-quality and creative workforce.

Minister Amari, who met Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang on May 22, highlighted Vietnam’s role in ASEAN and its efforts to promote economic development in the Mekong sub-region.

With its great potential, Vietnam now has the ability to develop at the pace of the other large regional countries and is likely to become one of the leading ASEAN nations in the future, he said.

At present, both parties are working hard to complete the negotiations on the signing of an Economic Partnership Agreement in order to further facilitate bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation, Mr Amari said.

For his part, Minister Hoang said Japan is Vietnam’s biggest official development assistance (ODA) donor, making up around 30 percent of the country’s total ODA.

Mr Hoang said Vietnam has an abundant young workforce with around 70 percent of its population aged below 40, an increasing purchasing power and a favourable geographical site which has helped the nation become a production base and part of the goods distribution chain for foreign businesses.

Minister Amari said that Japan is willing to provide energy saving technology to ASEAN and Vietnam as there is an increasing demand for energy in the region and natural resources are getting scarcer. Vietnam and Japan also signed an agreement on future nuclear cooperation, he added.

Minister Hoang also met with President of the Japan-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship League Tsutomu Takebe, Chairman of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren) Fujio Mitarai, Chairman of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Hayashi, President of the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (JAIF) Hattori and the leaders of Toyota, Sumitomo and Itochu.
