Vietnam emerges as largest supplier of cassava starch to China

VOV.VN - Vietnam supplied 1.14 million tonnes of cassava starch to China in the first five months of this year, accounting for 48.84% of China’s total imports and marking a year-on-year increase of 99%, thus positioning Vietnam as its largest supplier of cassava.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam cited data from China's General Administration of Customs, saying cassava starch import turnover from Vietnam also rose by 36.1% to US$409 million. The average import price stood at US$357.2 per tonne, down 31.6% year on year.

Thailand was the second largest supplier of cassava starch to China with 806,261 tonnes valued at US$322.2 million, up 13.3% in volume and down 19% in value from 2024. The average import price fell by 28.5% to US$399.7 per tonne.

Meanwhile, China imported 351,976 tonnes of cassava starch from Laos worth US$123.2 million, marking annual increases of 52.9% and 4.6%, respectively. The average import price was US$350.3 per tonnes, a fall of 31.6%.

In total, the first five months of the year witnessed China import 2.35 million tonnes of cassava starch worldwide costing US$871.07 million, up 50.2% in volume and 3.6% in value. The average import price of cassava starch was US$370.7 per tonne, down 31% from last year.

During the reviewed period, China's total import volume of cassava and cassava starch reached 4.97 million tonnes, worth US$1.38 billion, up 79.7% in volume and 19.5% in value.

Thailand and Vietnam continued to be the two main suppliers of cassava chips to this market, making up 98.6% of the total market share.

China imported two million tonnes of cassava chips from Thailand with a value of US$388 million, up 116% in volume and 60% from 2024. Vietnam exported 585,918 tonnes of the products worth US$114.4 million, marking increases of 115% and 61%, respectively.
