Vietnam becomes Port of Savannah’s fastest-growing trade partner
VOV.VN - Gaport.com has published an article reporting that Vietnam has become the Port of Savannah’s fastest-growing trade partner, amid rising manufacturing activity and expanded logistics capacity.
“With its strategic location and business-friendly policies, Vietnam represents an expanding logistics market,” said Griff Lynch, President and CEO of Georgia Ports.
The article noted that the United States and Vietnam recently agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs to 20% on imports, with some product categories potentially moving to zero tariffs under a new trade framework. This is expected to expand access to the Vietnamese market for US exports. Over the past five years, Savannah’s container trade with Vietnam has increased by 38%, adding 104,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to reach 379,000 TEUs in fiscal year 2025.
Savannah now records steady two-way trade flows. Exports include forest products, food and cotton from Georgia and other states, as well as US commodities such as hardware, resins and retail consumer goods. Imports from Vietnam include apparel, footwear, furniture, electronics and machinery. Georgia Ports currently offers nine direct ocean carrier services between Savannah and Vietnam, with a transit time of 33 days from Vietnam to Savannah.
The article also pointed out that in November, Gemini- an operational collaboration between shipping lines Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, selected Savannah as its first port of call on the US East Coast for its TP11/US1 service, originating from the Port of Haiphong in Vietnam. The revised rotation now runs Haiphong-Ningbo-Shanghai-Lazaro Cardenas-Savannah-Charleston-New York-Singapore, with an advertised transit time of 39 days from Haiphong to Savannah.
In 2024, US-Vietnam trade totalled approximately US$135 billion, making the United States Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner, after China.
