US becomes Vietnam's largest timber importer

(VOV) - The US is now the largest importer of the nation’s wood and wooden products, accounting for 35.8% of market share, according to the Vietnam Customs.

In August alone, Vietnam grossed US$199.7 million from exporting wood and wooden products to the US. Last year, the country’s wood exports to the US fetched more than US$2 billion. Vietnam now ranks second in the world in exporting wood products to the US second only to China.

To boost exports to the demanding market, the Ministry of Industry and Trade conducted trade promotion programmes which have contributed to export growth and the development of Vietnamese wood trademark in the US market.

Recently, Vietnamese businesses showcased their products at the High Point Market 2014 in the US, which is the world’s most prestigious home furnishing trade show.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the country's wood exports to foreign markets in September reached US$464 million, bringing export value in the first nine months of the year to US$4.41 billion, up 13.5% against the same period last year.

So far, Vietnam has exported wood products to the US, Japan, China, Republic of Korea, UK and Canada.
