Tuna exports hit record high of US$1 billion this year

VOV.VN - Tuna export turnover passed the US$1 billion mark for the first time ever on December 21, with the figure for the entire year expected to reach US$1.03 billion.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the United States, Canada, Japan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia are the top five largest markets for Vietnamese tuna products.

The US was the country’s largest tuna export market, with 11-month turnover edging up 56% compared to the same period from last year to bring in US$461 million.

Canada ranked second with turnover achieving US$48 million, up 75% year on year. In addition, the other three major export markets, including Japan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia recorded turnover of US$38 million, US$31 million, and US$28 million, showing respective increases of 58%, 17%, and 387%.

Elsewhere, Thailand remained the sixth largest tuna export market with a 120% year on year increase.

Most notably, tuna exports to member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) throughout the reviewed period soared by 95% to reach nearly US$13.5 million.

Despite this growth, tuna exports continue to face difficulties as inflation has reduced the purchasing power of many markets, especially in the US, Belgium, Israel, and Egypt.

The VASEP forecasts that tuna exports over the coming year would continue to record strong growth, but at a slower rate.
