Robusta dominates Vietnam’s coffee exports to Japan despite price decline

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s coffee exports to Japan in the first two months of 2026 were heavily dominated by Robusta, which accounted for 63% of total export value, underscoring its continued role as the country’s key export variety in this market.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, coffee exports to Japan reached 7,100 tonnes in February 2026, with a total value of US$38.4 million, down 47.5% in volume and 44.2% in value compared to January, and down 35.5% and 43.4% respectively year on year.

In the January–February period, Vietnam exported 20,600 tonnes of coffee to Japan worth US$107.4 million, down 0.6% in volume and 15.8% in value from the same period in 2025. The drop in export earnings was largely attributed to a significant decline in export prices.

Robusta remained the dominant export category, making up 63% of total export value, while Arabica accounted for 6.2%. Processed coffee products represented a notable 30.7%, reflecting a steady presence of higher value-added products in Vietnam’s export structure.

Export prices showed mixed movements. In February, the average export price rose by 6.1% month on month to US$5,425 per tonne, but was still 12.1% lower than a year earlier. Over the first two months of 2026, the average export price stood at US$5,219 per tonne, down 15.3% year on year, weighing on overall export performance.

Meanwhile, Japan’s overall coffee imports continued to expand, intensifying competition among suppliers. Data from Japan’s customs agency showed that the country imported 30,700 tonnes of coffee in January 2026, valued at US$222.3 million, up 4.0% in volume and 33.3% in value compared to the same month in 2025. The average import price rose sharply by 28.2% to US$7,229 per tonne.

Notably, while Japan’s import prices from most major suppliers increased, the average price of coffee imported from Vietnam fell by 12.5% year on year to US$4,697 per tonne, highlighting a divergence that may have affected Vietnam’s export value.

Japan sourced coffee from 38 countries and territories in January. Brazil was the largest supplier, exporting 13,600 tonnes worth US$103.3 million, up 19.2% in volume and 83.6% in value, raising its market share from 38.48% to 44.09%. Vietnam ranked second with 9,100 tonnes valued at US$42.7 million, down 2.8% in volume and 14.9% in value, with its share slipping from 31.61% to 29.56%. Colombia placed third, exporting 3,200 tonnes worth US$29.0 million, surging 48.8% in volume and 107.2% in value, increasing its market share from 7.28% to 10.41%.
