An electricity shortage of 300-400MW is likely to occur in the dry season this year, said director of the Electricity Regulating Centre Dang Huy Cuong at a meeting in Hanoi on Thursday.

The centre will have to make power cuts in some regions due to circumstances beyond its control, Mr Cuong said, the electricity output shortfall might reach around 92 million kWh in May and June this year.

If this happens, the daily electricity output will be cut by 1.3 million kWh per day. Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will regulate its electricity supplies to localities.

According to Minister of Industry Hoang Trung Hai, to overcome the electricity shortages in the dry season this year and the following years, EVN should focus on operating its power plants properly, maintaining water levels at major reservoirs, especially reservoirs in the north. In addition, EVN should develop sources of electricity, negotiate the purchase of electricity from China via the 22kV transmission line and ask people to save electricity.
