Police bust huge transnational gold smuggling ring

VOV.VN - The police have broken up a huge gold smuggling ring from Cambodia to Vietnam, said Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam.

This smuggling ring has operated for a long time and involves many people in various provinces, said Lieut. Gen. Xo who is also head of the Office of the Ministry of Public Security.

Ring members had purchased foreign currency (US$) from Vietnam, transferred it to Cambodia to buy gold, and then transported gold back to Vietnam for consumption.

Only in two days (September 27 and 28), this ring smuggled 198 kg of gold from Cambodia to Vietnam, said Lieut Gen. Xo, adding the police unmasked those masterminding the transportation and consumption of gold.

Xo said authorities had seized 103 kg of gold, more than US$2.8 million and nearly VND27 billion, along with many related vehicles, tools and exhibits.

Investigations are underway.
