Over 50,000 tons of Hung Yen longans set for exports to global market

VOV.VN - The 2025 longan crop in northern Hung Yen province is expected to receive a major boost in both yield and quality, with more than 50,000 tons projected for harvest, over 60% of which will meet VietGAP and organic standards.

This is not only good news for farmers but also an opportunity for Hung Yen longans to affirm their position in international markets.

According to reports, Hung Yen currently has about 5,800 hectares of longan orchards. Of this area, 15-20% is dedicated to premium specialty varieties renowned for their sweet flavor, thick flesh, and small seeds.

The province benefits from favorable soil and climate conditions, along with generations of cultivation experience. As a result, Hung Yen longans are not only flavorful but also yield-stable, making them popular in both domestic and international markets.

The 2025 crop will be divided into three harvest phases: early-ripening longans, harvested before July 30 (accounting for roughly 10% of the total area); main-season longans, harvested from August 1-30 (about 50%); and late-ripening longans, harvested from August 30-September 20 (nearly 40%).

This structure allows Hung Yen farmers to extend the harvest season, avoiding oversupply that could drive prices down. Thanks to favorable weather, this year’s yield is forecast to increase by about 15% compared to last year, surpassing 50,000 tons.

Notably, over 60% of the output has received VietGAP and organic certification, meeting stringent requirements from high-end markets such as the United States, the European Union, and Japan, while maintaining exports to China, a key consumer market.

Nguyen Le Huy, Vice Chairman of the Hung Yen provincial People’s Committee, said Hung Yen longans have been granted geographical indication status and rank among Vietnam’s Top 50 most famous fruits. “This is a source of pride for generations of Hung Yen residents. Maintaining quality and affirming the brand is not only economically significant but also helps preserve the cultural heritage of the Red River Delta,” he emphasized.

Following the province’s merger with the former Thai Binh, Hung Yen has continued to capitalize on its agricultural strengths. “Longans, recognized with geographical indication and listed among Vietnam’s Top 50 fruits, remain a symbol of pride for the province,”  Huy added.

In recent years, Hung Yen has successfully organized longan festivals and promotional weeks in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other provinces, while actively participating in virtual trade promotion conferences with international markets. These efforts have gradually expanded the global presence of Hung Yen longans.

Bui Quang Hung, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade), noted that Hung Yen is one of the leading provinces in agricultural trade promotion. He stressed the need to continue building and promoting the brand, standardizing production according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic requirements, diversifying products and investing in deep processing instead of relying solely on fresh fruit, while strengthening logistics and e-commerce to expand export markets.

Provincial leaders affirmed Hung Yen’s commitment to providing a transparent and favorable investment environment, while supporting farmers and businesses with technology, seed supply, and trade promotion. The long-term goal is to develop a green, sustainable agricultural region, link products to QR code traceability, and strengthen consumer trust at home and abroad.
