The Vietnam Civil Aviation Administration has received a request by the Ha Long Investment and Development JSC in southern Kien Giang province, asking for permission to establish a third private airline in Vietnam.

Mekong Air, formerly named Phu Quoc Air, has been selected to become the country’s third private airline in an aviation development strategy approved by the Government. It has a charter capital of VND600 billion, VND300 billion more than the minimum level laid down in the Aviation Law.

In its project, Mekong Air plans to use Canada’s Bombadier aircraft to run domestic routes from HCM City to Can Tho, Rach Gia and Phu Quoc, and vice versa.

The first commercial flights are scheduled to take off in the second quarter of this year.

If Mekong Air gets permission, this will become the third airline to operate in Vietnam, after Vietjet Air and Speed Up Air. The first private airline, Vietjet Air, was granted a license at the end of December last year, while the second, Speed Up Air, was permitted on May 27 this year.
