Market watchdog puts Baby Three dolls under scrutiny

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has requested the Market Management Department in cities and provinces across the country to strengthen inspections on toys, including Baby Three dolls, that contain images and content related to Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty.

In a recently issued dispatch, the MoIT cited recent media reports indicating that some children’s toys, such as Baby Three, feature images resembling the “nine-dash line” that violates Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty. These toys are being sold through traditional markets and e-commerce platforms like Shopee, TikTok Shop, and Facebook.

The MoIT asked all local market watchdogs to strengthen cooperation with e-commerce platforms to monitor the situation; proactively implement professional measures to inspect and handle violations; and take strict action against organizations and individuals violating regulations.

These measures aim to ensure compliance with legal provisions and safeguard Vietnam’s sovereignty in commercial activities, said the MoIT.

Tran Huu Linh, director of the MoIT’s Domestic Market Management and Development Department, told Tien Phong newswire that toys with the “nine-dash line” image violate Vietnamese law, posing risks to national security and territorial sovereignty.

According to the official, some businesses have brought these products into Vietnam without carefully inspecting their images. Authorities are now conducting inspections and will penalize violations, including confiscation and recall of the products.

Baby Three, a plush toy line from China, was launched in May 2024 as a blind box collection, featuring designs inspired by animals like cats, rabbits, bears, and foxes. Recently, customers discovered the “nine-dash line” image on the dolls, leading to public outrage and calls for a boycott.

YouNet Analytics shows about 293,000 items of Labubu and Baby Three were sold from 30 stores on Shopee and TikTok Shop in late 2024. Meanwhile, Metric report indicates, despite only gaining popularity in September 2024, Baby Three dolls generated US$1.6 million in revenue last year.
