Machinery and equipment trade surpasses US$100 billion as of mid September
VOV.VN - Vietnam's total import-export turnover of machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts reached US$100 billion as of September 15, 2026, recording a modest trade surplus of US$36 million.
Exports accounted for US$50.7 billion against US$50.63 billion in imports, showing rapid expansion across the opening three quarters.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises served as the primary engine for manufacturing and shipments, generating 95.39% of the sector's foreign sales during the eight-month period of this year.
The US remained Vietnam's largest buyers for these products at US$19.6 billion, up 29.07%, representing 41.45% of total sectoral volume. The European Union ranked second at US$5.26 billion, followed by China at US$4.53 billion. Additional markets registering sharp gains included Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and Brazil.
Despite double-digit growth in shipments, domestic production remains heavily reliant on imported inputs, primarily electronic components, semiconductors, chips, hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel, and aluminum alloys sourced from China, South Korea, and ASEAN members.
Machinery and equipment currently rank as Vietnam's second-largest export category, trailing only computers and electronic components. Backed by capital inflows into processing and manufacturing, key public infrastructure projects, and a rising push toward green technology adoption, the industry retains substantial room for growth.
Sectoral projections indicate full-year exports may hit approximately US$70 billion, propelling total category trade to a record high exceeding US$140 billion.
