LG Energy Solution, Honda eye Vietnam’s electric motorcycle market
VOV.VN - The Republic of Korea’s LG Energy Solution (LGES) said on May 19 it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Honda and Hanoi’s authorities to jointly develop a public battery-swapping network for electric motorcycles in the Vietnamese capital.
According to LGES, the three parties agreed to build battery-swapping stations for electric motorcycles in central Hanoi, while also developing standardised battery and safety management systems as well as a business platform model for electric two-wheelers. A pilot project is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.
LGES, Honda and the Hanoi government plan to install around 50 battery-swapping stations in key areas of the city and deploy about 500 electric motorcycles.
According to LG Energy Solution, the company will provide 2,170 cylindrical battery cells and oversee battery safety management systems, battery-swapping operations and operational solutions. It will also introduce a battery lifecycle management system as part of the project.
Honda will be responsible for supplying battery packs, battery-swapping equipment and electric motorcycles, while Hanoi authorities will provide policy support, licensing and local operational coordination.
The agreement comes as Vietnam accelerates the electrification of two-wheeled transport. Hanoi will restrict petrol/diesel powered motorcycles and the move is expected to significantly boost demand for electric motorcycles and battery-swapping infrastructure.
Vietnam is currently one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, although electric motorcycles still account for a relatively small share. According to Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee, the country had around 80 million motorcycles in circulation in 2025, of which electric motorcycles accounted for only about 3.2 million units, or 4%.
Honda currently dominates Vietnam’s motorcycle market. Data from the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers showed Honda held about 86% of the country’s motorcycle market share in 2025.
LG Energy Solution said it expects to leverage Honda’s market strength and Hanoi’s policy support to gain operational experience and real-world data for its broader electric motorcycle battery expansion strategy in Southeast Asia.
The company’s representative described Vietnam as a key market in the region’s transition toward electric motorcycles and said LGES aims to contribute to the development of green transport infrastructure in the country through battery technology offering high safety, durability and long lifespan.
