In the first 3 quarters this year, Ho Chi Minh City has exported 4.2 million ornamental fish worth US$5 million, equalling last year’s total export.

The city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said the output of ornamental fish increases annually by nearly 50 percent and the number of fisheries has doubled to 292 since 1993.

Enterprises in the city export 60 species of ornamental fish raised in a total area of 88ha. Most of them are freshwater fish such as discus, guppy and beta fighter.

Europe remains the city’s largest importer, accounting for more than 65 percent of its total export revenue, followed by the US and Japan.

Export revenue in 2010 and 2020 is expected to be US$12-15 million and US$70-100 million respectively.
