Forum spotlights traceability tech in enhancing Vietnamese goods' competitiveness

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Industry and Trade, in coordination with relevant agencies, hosted a forum in Hanoi on October 9 to emphasise the critical role of identification and traceability technology in enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese products in both domestic and international markets.

The forum reaffirms Vietnam’s strong commitment to building a transparent and modern product ecosystem, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods, ensure the credibility of their origin, and deepen their integration into global markets.

For years, the domestic market has grappled with the proliferation of counterfeit, low-quality, and origin-unknown products. These goods have infiltrated traditional markets, supermarkets, convenience stores, and e-commerce platforms, causing significant damage to legitimate businesses and directly harming consumer interests.

Experts at the forum underscored that traceability and improved market oversight are vital tools for modernising enforcement, enabling agencies to detect and prevent fraud, counterfeiting, and illicit trade more effectively.

With Vietnam currently a signatory to nearly 20 free trade agreements, origin transparency is not just a regulatory requirement, it is a key condition for accessing tariff preferences and preserving the credibility of Vietnamese exports in global markets.

Participants also stressed the urgent need to standardise traceability systems, particularly in the e-commerce sector, to ensure transparency, build consumer trust, and support the sustainable growth of digital trade.

Technologies such as blockchain, IoT, QR codes, GS1 standards, UID, and EPCIS are being leveraged to enhance data security and product authentication in the digital space, they noted.

Several business representatives presented successful case studies—from agricultural value chains using the iTrace247 system, to major corporations proactively adopting end-to-end traceability as a strategic advantage for international competition.

In the current era of economic integration, traceability has become more than just a compliance tool, it serves as a “brand passport” for Vietnamese goods entering global markets. Notably, blockchain-powered systems like iTrace247 have enabled the export of traceable products such as Thanh Ha lychee and Son La produce to demanding markets like Japan and Singapore.

Meanwhile, many export-oriented enterprises have adopted origin transparency as a survival strategy. By developing closed production chains and standardising traceability records, they not only minimise the risk of trade defence measures but also bolster their reputation in high-standard markets.

Vietnam’s export performance reflects this shift from US$114.5 billion in 2012 to over US$405.5 billion in 2024. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, export turnover hit US$305.96 billion, up 14.8% year on year.

“Transparency in the origin of goods is not just a regulatory requirement but a cornerstone for business sustainability and consumer confidence,” speakers concluded.
