First container vessel from China arrives in Can Tho via river-sea route
VOV.VN - The first vessel operating a direct international river-sea container shipping route from Nanning Port in China has arrived safely at Can Tho Port, opening up new opportunities for trade and the movement of goods to and from the Mekong Delta.
A welcoming ceremony was held at Cai Cui port on September 24 by Can Tho Port JSC, Vietnam Maritime Corporation and Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group Co., Ltd.
The new route connects Nanning and Can Tho via the Pinglu Canal, which links the Xijiang River system with the Beibu Gulf and provides Guangxi and southwestern China with more direct access to the sea.
The Nanning-Can Tho service launched its maiden voyage on September 16, when the canal officially became operational.
Following the successful inaugural voyage, the route is expected to operate twice a month, with each journey taking around seven days.
The service is planned to use river-sea container vessels with a capacity of 4,900 DWT and 500 TEUs. Refrigerated containers are expected to account for 25% of capacity and dry containers 75%.
Preparations for the new connection began before the Pinglu Canal entered operation. On August 4, the M/V LI DA TONG 2 HAO arrived at Cai Cui port from Qinzhou port for a trial run of the international container route.
During the trial, 66 containers of agricultural products from the Mekong Delta were loaded at Can Tho port for shipment to China’s Guangxi market.
