Vietnam’s third international exhibition on nuclear power opened in Hanoi on May 14 in the hope of gaining a wealth of experience in nuclear power plant construction.

Addressing the event, Minister of Sciences and Technology Hoang Van Phong said the ministry has submitted a bill on nuclear power to the ongoing third session of the National Assembly in a bid to formulate a legal foundation for nuclear energy-related applications and development in the country.

He reported that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is in a hurry to complete its report on investment sources and construction of the first nuclear power plant, which is scheduled to begin operation in 2020.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the nuclear energy company of Canada, the Guangdong nuclear power company of China and companies from the Republic of Korea, Japan, Russia, France and Vietnam are all participating in the exhibition which will run in Hanoi until May 17.

The first two nuclear power exhibitions were held in Hanoi in 2004 and 2006.
