Economists hold dialogue on ways to boost Russian exports

(VOV) - There should be concrete plans to conduct market surveys and create a good image for Vietnamese products to boost exports to the Russian market.

Economists made the remark during a talk in Hanoi on September 12 to introduce Vietnamese agro-forestry-fishery products to the Russian market.

Nguyen Hoai Nam, Vice President and Vice General Secretary of the Vietnam Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) said Vietnamese businesses have encountered difficulties in the Russian market such as tough competition, non-tariff barriers and complex payment system.

Nguyen Ton Quyen, President of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association proposed that the Government should speed up investment and trade promotion in Russia.

He also emphasised the importance of setting up the Association of Vietnam Investors in Russia (AVIR), which will serve a liaison agency to help Vietnamese businesses seek business opportunities, expand the scale of investment and connect the business communities.

Tran Thanh Hai, deputy head of the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said from 1990s up to now, Russia has remained a traditional market of Vietnam.

With a GDP of US$1,500 billion and a population of 143 million, Russia is seen as potential market for Vietnamese farm and seafood produce in the coming time.

In the 2008-2012 period, two-way trade volume doubled with an average growth rate of 28%. In 2013 alone, trade between Vietnam and Russia reached nearly US$2.76 billion, up 12.61% from a year earlier.
