A senior leader of HCM City has assured investors, both local and foreign, of the city's determination to curb strikes, which have occurred widely in the locality recently.

At a meeting on April 6, which also saw the attendance of representatives of diplomatic missions, municipal People's Committee Vice Chairman Nguyen Thien Nhan affirmed that the city has been taking a host of measures to deal with labour strikes.

For example, the city has made efforts to develop trade unions at foreign-invested enterprises, where most of the recently-reported labour strikes have broken out. It has also organised courses to introduce the Foreign Investment Law and the Labour Code to workers.

The city will kick-start a housing programme for workers while closing boarding houses that fail to meet safety and hygiene standards, asserted the municipal leader.

From December 28, 2005 to February 2006, there were 47 labour strikes involving 47,000 workers in the city,
