Durian traceability standardization in Central Highlands for sustainable development
VOV.VN - The development and implementation of a traceability system is an urgent requirement as the durian sector expands rapidly, particularly in the Central Highlands, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
On March 25 in Dak Lak province, the ministry held a conference on implementing a pilot traceability system for durian in the Central Highlands. The event drew participation from representatives of ministries, agencies, localities, associations, businesses and cooperatives in the sector.
The ministry said this is the first time a traceability system has been carried out in a coordinated manner, aiming to connect data across the entire chain from production and harvesting to distribution and export.
The training aims to introduce the system and enable localities, businesses and farmers to access and operate it effectively. Traceability must ensure maximum support for stakeholders across the production and distribution chain, while being continuously improved through feedback from implementation.
At the conference, participants were briefed on the pilot traceability programme and updated on regulations for exporting durian to China. They also discussed technological solutions, management of raw material areas and the organisation of production along the value chain.
Many opinions from businesses and cooperatives focused on challenges in implementation, particularly data connectivity and meeting requirements of importing markets.
The conference also served as a forum for management agencies to gather feedback from practice, in order to coordinate research and propose solutions to resolve bottlenecks and improve the system in the coming period. Standardising traceability is expected to improve transparency, strengthen competitiveness and support the sustainable development of the Central Highlands’ durian brand.
Nguyen Van Long, Director of the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said traceability is an essential requirement for deeper integration of the durian sector into international markets. The ministry will continue to coordinate closely with localities and businesses to improve the system based on practical feedback, ensuring it meets management requirements while facilitating production and export activities.
“We expect the traceability system not only to serve management purposes but to become a practical tool that brings practical value to businesses and farmers, thereby helping enhance the reputation and standing of Vietnamese durian in the international market,” he said.
