In the first four months of 2008, the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap produced more than 56,000 tonnes of seafood, mainly cat fish, to earn an estimated US$58 million, up nearly 119 percent on the same period last year.

The price of catfish has increased to reach VND15,000-15,500 kg.

 

Dong Thap province now has a total of eight processing plants what are designed to handle 94,000 tonnes of seafood per year, creating 8,800 jobs for local people.

 

The province is expected to have another eight plants by the end of this year, while five of its operational plants will expand their capacity to raise the total design capacity to 200,000 tonnes per year.

 

The local value of seafood exports is estimated to reach US$200 million, an annual rise of more than 34 percent.
