Deputy PM urges continued diplomatic efforts to seek appropriate US solutions

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son on April 8 chaired a meeting of the task force on strengthening cooperation and proactively responding to adjustments in US economic and trade policies.

As head of the task force, he urged members to stay focused on their assigned duties and continue diplomatic efforts through various channels to engage US agencies in adopting solutions that are appropriate to Vietnam’s specific conditions and both nations’ comprehensive strategic partnership.

At the meeting, task force members shared updates on recent developments and discussed possible responses following the US’s decision to impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from several countries, including Vietnam.

Deputy PM Son assigned specific responsibilities to relevant ministries. Regarding tariffs, the Ministry of Finance was asked to continue reviewing and finalizing plans to lower import duties. For non-tariff measures, ministries and agencies were tasked with reviewing existing regulations and identifying any unreasonable provisions, even those affecting domestic businesses for removal or recommendation for removal.

Concerning rules of origin, he requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to tighten oversight and prevent violations. The Ministry of Finance was directed to step up customs information exchange with US authorities to support trade defence and anti-tax evasion efforts.

On intellectual property rights, the Ministry of Science and Technology was tasked with reviewing relevant legislation and addressing US concerns. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance, in coordination with other ministries, is to develop a bilateral agreement with the US aimed at upgrading the existing Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), including new provisions on taxation and intellectual property.

Additionally, the Deputy PM asked the Ministry of Finance to propose a comprehensive support package for affected businesses. The Ministry of Industry and Trade was instructed to intensify promotion of the country’s 17 free trade agreements, expand trade promotion in new markets, and assist enterprises in adapting to shifting market conditions. Ministries were also told to ensure timely updates for exporters on changes in foreign market policies.
