The UK- based International Power PLC, Japan’s Sojitz, and the local Thai Binh Duong Joint Stock Company have received approval from Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai to develop the infrastructure for the Son My thermal power plant in southern Binh Thuan province.

The provincial Department of Industry and Trade said the US$4.9 billion plant will be developed under a BOO (build-operate-own) or BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.

It will have three generating units with a total capacity of 3,600MW.

The construction of the Son My 1 Industrial Park in Ham Tan District, is scheduled for completion in 2018, with the first unit to be put into operation in 2015.
