Conference explores ways to boost Vietnam's agricultural exports to Japan

VOV.VN - Vietnamese exports of processed agricultural products, particularly fresh fruit and seafood, to Japan have witnessed significant growth, thanks to expanded market access and improved product quality standards in line with Japanese requirements.

The view was shared by Bui Quang Hung, deputy director of the Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, during a Vietnam-Japan economic cooperation conference held in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, on May 27.

Hung noted that the two countries have signed several key bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements, including the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP), and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). These agreements, he said, provide strong frameworks to promote trade, investment, and business cooperation.

Meanwhile, Aya Wada, director general of Osaka City’s Economic Strategy Bureau, recalled the longstanding partnership between Osaka and Ho Chi Minh City, which began in 1997. The two sides have regularly engaged in exchanges and cooperation in areas such as the environment, water management, economics, and technology. Their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was renewed in May 2024, paving the way for deeper cooperation and technology transfer.

The conference continues to offer valuable opportunities for businesses from both countries to further strengthen economic ties, said Wada.

At the conference, 28 Vietnamese enterprises introduced many typical products to Japanese partners, including fresh and processed agricultural products, construction materials, mechanical and electronic components, consumer goods, and cosmetics, aiming to enhance bilateral trade.

Data from the Department of Vietnam Customs shows total Vietnam-Japan trade turnover in 2024 reached US$46.2 billion, a 2.77% increase from 2023. Vietnamese exports to Japan hit US$24.61 billion, up 5.55% year-on-year.

In the first four months of the year, Vietnamese exports to Japan amounted to US$8.5 billion, up 12%, whilst the import value stood at US$7.9 billion, up 6.5%.
