Construction of a 1,800 MW power centre at a cost of around US$2.1 billion began in northern Thai Binh province on May 17.

The centre, covering an area of 250 ha, around 25 km to the east of Thai Binh city, will house two coal-fueled plants with the 600 MW one invested by the Electricity of Vietnam and the 1,200 MW plant invested by the PV Power Corporation.

Using coal from Hon Gai, Quang Ninh province, the two plants will supply about 12 billion kWh a year for the national power grid in 2015 to meet the growing demands of the province and its surrounding areas.
