Cashing in on Asian taste for jellyfish

VOV.VN - Off the northeast Vietnam coastal province of Quang Ninh in the waters surrounding the island of Co To, fishers are cashing in and reaping big profits from the Asian taste for the notoriously bland jellyfish.

In the Asian countries of Japan and China people have been salting, drying and rehydrating it in soups for centuries.

It is also believed to have medicinal properties — like alleviating arthritis pain.

In these waters, the schools of jellyfish that drift near the surface during spring are so dense that a boat can fill its trawl net in just a few minutes and haul in tons per day, say local fishers.

The jellyfish industry has been about the best thing that's happened to us in decades, says another.

The island is now the country’s largest jellyfish fishery by weight landed.

On good days, fishers are making thousands of US dollars from jellyfish trawling.

As many species of sea life decline due to overfishing and environmental changes, jellyfish populations are thriving in the fishery that surrounds the island.

They can even survive in oxygen-deprived waters where most other sea life is absent.
