Can Gio International Transshipment Port project gets the go-ahead
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese government on January 16 approved the investment policy for the Can Gio International Transshipment Port project to boost the country’s logistics capabilities and enhance international trade.
The goal of the project is to build and develop a comprehensive international transshipment port that will include container handling services, maritime port operations, and other related services.
The project will be carried out in Go Con Cho islet of Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City, on a total land area of approximately 571 hectares.
The estimated total investment for the project is approximately VND129,000 billion (around US$5.4 billion). The main quay length is expected to be about 7 kilometers, while the barge berth will measure around 2 kilometers.
The estimated cargo throughput in the first year for the port is expected to be around 2.1 million TEUs (1 TEU equals one 20-foot container). After 7 phases of investment, the port’s handling capacity is projected to reach 16.9 million TEUs by 2047.
Once fully operational, the port is anticipated to contribute between VND34,000 to 40,000 billion (approximately US$1.45 - 1.7 billion) to the state budget annually.
The transshipment port is positioned strategically to benefit from Vietnam’s increasing role in global trade, leveraging the country’s proximity to major shipping routes in Southeast Asia. This project supports the country’s efforts to develop its maritime economy and improve connectivity with regional and international markets.
