The Ca Mau fertilizer plant, a Vietnam-China joint venture, is a symbol of the two countries’ close friendship and economic cooperation, said Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung.
The Deputy PM was addressing a ceremony in Hanoi on May 6 to sign an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for this project. The signatories were the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN), the Wuhuan Engineering Corporation (WEC) and the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC).
The 52-ha plant has a design capacity of 800,000 tonnes of fertilizer per year. Once fully operational in 2012, it is expected to meet around 60 percent of the country’s demand by using natural gas sourced from PM3-CAA gas field offshore the continental shelf of Vietnam.
Deputy PM Hung said the Ca Mau project, which is part of the US$900-million Ca Mau gas-power-fertilizer complex in Khanh An commune in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, will contribute to ensuring food security for Vietnam.
