Boosting Vietnam-Singapore economic cooperation

(VOV) - Economic cooperation is a key factor in Vietnam-Singapore relationship, said Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Nguyen Tien Minh in a recent interview with Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

In 2014, two-way trade turnover increased by 20% against the previous year. Singapore’s investment in Vietnam has risen sharply. Last year, it invested US$32.7 billion in the country and became the third largest investor, only after Japan and the Republic of Korea, he noted.

The two sides have pushed cooperation in other fields to realise partnership agreements. They have strengthened political dialogues and shared common interest in maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, people-to-people exchange has developed strongly. More Vietnamese people have visited Singapore on tours, and for shopping, studying and healthcare, Minh added.

He laid stress on great contributions of the Overseas Vietnamese community in Singapore to reinforcing the relationship between the two countries.

Minh highly appreciated the dynamic, young, intellectual and creative Vietnamese residents in Singapore. Notably, the Liaison Committee of the Vietnamese Community in Singapore was established in January 2014 and has operated effectively.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore has held a get-together for overseas Vietnamese to welcome the Lunar New Year (Tet), which attracted more than 1,000 people. A competition on wrapping traditional Chung (square glutinous rice) cake was also held during the event.

Minh said that in the coming period, the Embassy will continue working with the Liaison Committee to strengthen solidarity among overseas Vietnamese as well as the connectivity between them and the Embassy.
