An Australian economist says Vietnam has become one of the best performing economies in South-East Asia with an average growth of 8-9 percent every year.

Since Vietnam embraced the policy of “doi moi” (Renewal) a decade ago, millions have escaped poverty, economist Ray Mallon told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

He said the roads in the country are now full of new cars and motorbikes. This proves that Vietnamese people are becoming more and more prosperous.

He added that other sectors, such as manufacturing and agriculture, are still operating well and the consumer demand is growing remarkably.

Mallon said that the number of internet users has increased rapidly to a level as equal as in Thailand but higher than in the Philippines.
