The Aeon Vietnam Co. Ltd, part of the Aeon Group, a major Japanese retail and financial services corporation, was officially opened in HCM City on March 2.

CEO of the Aeon Group Motoya Okada said he believes that Aeon will become a leading retailer in Vietnam by 2020.

He highly highlighted the tremendous potential of the Vietnamese retail market, which has attracted a lot of foreign investors.

Aeon is committed to building close relationships with local authorities and people and contributing positively to the country's socio-economic development, Okada said.

Aeon Vietnam has charter capital of US$101 million and investment capital of US$109 million, according to Nishitohge Yasuo, General Director of the company.

In September 2012, the company will begin construction of the 77,000 square metre Aeon-Tan Phu Celadon trading centre in HCM City with modern infrastructure.

Once completed in 2014, the centre will provide space for 130 retail shops, including a third reserved for famous Vietnamese trade names, a third for Japanese brands and the remainder for other international retailers.

Yasuo said Aeon is planning to build about 20 retail centres across the country by 2020. These centres will modernize Vietnam’s retail industry and pushing Vietnamese exports into Japan.

The company will also transfer technology and train human resources for the local retail sector, he added.
