More than 2.6 million foreigners visited Vietnam in the past seven months of this year, an increase of 10.7 percent from a year ago, according to the General Statistics Office.

Most of them came from Thailand, the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, China, France, Singapore and Malaysia. Notably, the numbers of visitors from the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore increased by 55, 41.6 and 27.5 percent respectively. However, those coming from China, the Republic of Korea and Japan saw a slight decline.

To meet the target of receiving 5 million foreign visitors this year, Tran Chien Thang, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told the media in Hanoi on July 30 that the tourism sector will continue to simplify procedures for international travel services and increase cooperation with Laos and Cambodia in developing caravan tours. It will coordinate with aviation agencies and businesses to launch tourism promotion activities and diversify tourism products.

In addition, the sector will continue to upgrade infrastructure facilities and improve the staff’s professional skills and foreign languages.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is preparing for the 2009 ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) to be held in Vietnam for the first time from December 5-12. The forum is a great chance for Vietnam to promote its tourism potential and expand cooperation with regional countries. It is expected to attract 1,500 foreign delegates, including the representatives of 400 travel agencies coming from key markets in North America, Europe and Northeast Asia.
