Kim Yong-nam, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), has told former US President Jimmy Carter that the country is committed to denuclearising the peninsula and resuming six-way talks, the DPRK’s KCNA news agency reported.

“Kim Yong-nam expressed the will of the DPRK’s government for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the resumption of the six-party talks,” KCNA said.

Mr. Carter left Pyongyang on August 27 after securing the release of a US man detained in DPRK since January.

Mahli Gomes, the US man detained by the DPRK since January for entering the country illegally boarded the same, civilian jet which carried Mr. Carter to Pyongyang two days ago.

The US State Department welcomed the release of Gomes, saying in a statement that “we appreciate former president Carter’s humanitarian effort and welcome the DPRK’s decision to grant Mr Gomes special amnesty and allow him to return to the United States.”
