Officials from 50 donor countries and organisations attended a Haiti reconstruction conference in the Dominican Republic on June 2.

This is the fourth conference of its kind after a powerful quake in January 2010 killed hundreds of thousands of people in this Caribbean nation.

In his opening speech, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez affirmed that the international community stands shoulder to shoulder with Haiti to overcome the aftermath of the earthquake.

Delegates looked at international commitments and reconstruction projects on housing, education, power generation, agriculture production, as well as building institutions, costing up to US$5.3 billion in 2011.

At a donor conference for Haiti in New York, the international community committed nearly US$10 billion for the reconstruction process in Haiti. Many international organisations and countries pledged to provide financial and technical assistance to this process.

The World Bank agreed to write off debts while the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) decided to grant US$2 billion credits to develop energy, transport and education systems in this country.

The Haitian government estimated the reconstruction process would cost this Caribbean nation US$11.5 billion in the next 10 years, with the funding mostly focused on building schools, hospitals and houses.

The January 12 quake caused property damage of US$7 billion, killed nearly 300,000 people and left millions homeless.
