VFF Congress undertakes democracy promotion

(VOV) - The 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) concluded in Hanoi on September 27 with re-election of senior positions and adoption of programs and resolutions on promoting great national unity and democracy.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and President of the VFF Central Committee will stay on his previous position while Mr. Vu Trong Kim, member of the Party Central Committee, Vice President and General Secretary of the VFF Central Committee was also re-elected to keep this post in the new term. 

Accordingly, the 8th VFF Front Central Committee consists of 383 members, up 30 or nearly 9% compared to the 7th Congress. The new VFF Central Committee represents all classes of people, 54 ethnic groups, religions and overseas Vietnamese. 50.9 percent of the total members are non-Party members, up 0.2% against the previous tenure, 26.4% are ethnic minority people, 16.1% are religious dignitaries, and 21% are female members. 

Earlier, the Congress adopted the Political Report and the revised Regulations of the VFF and discussed measures to effectively implement the VFF’s Action Program in the 2014-2019 period. It also approved the organization’s Charter and personnel plan for the eighth tenure (2014-2019). 

In his closing speech, VFF President Nhan highlighted the great success of the 8th Congress, which finalized the entire programme and achieved set targets and requirements.

“Each VFF member and VFF Committees at all levels should work harder to bring the congress’ resolutions to life and encourage the  people to properly and effectively implement 5 VFF action programmes aiming to gather strength of great national unity, reinforce national defence in the new situation for the goal of building a powerful and democratic country.

For his part, VFF Vice President and General Secretary Vu Trong Kim said most of delegates’ opinions demonstrated high consensus with the congress’ political report and more clarified what have been achieved in the front’s operations in the 2009-2014 term.

During the previous term, VFF members were fully aware of their core role and responsibilities in advocating and promoting democracy and social unanimity in enhancing great national unity bloc.

The delegates also proposed increasing the responsibilities for exercising grassroots democracy, building harmonious and stable labour relations and improving the quality of inspection, supervision and implementation of legal regulations on labour, Kim said.
