Grand parade marks 40 years of reunification

(VOV) -On April 30, Ho Chi Minh City hosted a military parade and a grand meeting celebrating the 40th anniversary of total southern liberation and national reunification.

Those in attendance included General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former Party General Secretaries Le Kha Phieu, Nong Duc Manh, State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung along with numerous former Party and State leaders.

The celebration was also attended by Lao Vice President Bounnhang Vorachith, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An, and Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba’s Central Committee Jose Ramon Balaguer Cabrera. 

The event, attended by 6,000 people from army and police forces as well as students and representatives from different unions and organization, transpired with the epic highlighting patriotism and national pride.

The parade recalled the images of the forces participating in the 1975 Spring Offensive in 1975 and soldiers advancing towards Saigon.

In his speech, PM Nguyen Tan Dung applauded 1975 Spring Victory as a glorious chapter in Vietnam’s history that liberated the South and reunified the country, ushering a new era of independence and reunification and building Vietnam into a strong nation with prosperous people and a just, democratic and civilized society. 

He expressed his gratitude to late President Ho Chi Minh, outstanding Party and State leaders, war heroes, and people who devoted their lives to the fight for national independence and reunification. 

The government leader also thanked socialist countries, particularly the Soviet Union and China, and peace-loving governments, organisations, and people around the globe for their material and spiritual support to Vietnam’s past struggles for independence and reunification. 

He called upon the entire country to bring patriotism into full play, speed up the " Doi Moi" renewal process, reinforce national solidarity, build a strong political system, ensure political and social stability, and attain rapid and sustainable socio-economic development.
