“The National Assembly has completed its tasks of organizational structure and voting of key state leadership positions. Deputies expected the elected and approved leaders to improve their performance and better meet the public’s aspirations,” the top legislator said.

Chairwoman Ngan said that in the context of complicated world situations and unfavorable domestic events, including environmental pollution, the Formosa case and the East Sea issue following the PCA ruling, the national social economic development targets will be impacted.

“The 14th National Assembly should improve its performance to raise productivity and complete its assigned tasks. East deputy should uphold the fine tradition of the National Assembly’s 70 years of operation and get directly connected to voters to build a state of the people, for the people and by the people," she added.

The same day, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Office, Do Manh Hung addressed a press briefing on the successful conclusion of the 14th National Assembly’s 1st session, especially the voting and approval of key state leadership positions.

He reiterated the supervisory role of the legislative body and its committees while answering questions about the Formosa case and accountability of former Ha Tinh provincial Party chief, Vo Kim Cu, “The National Assembly will follow up supervisory outcomes of the Committee on Science, Technology and Environment. The NA Standing Committee adopted a list of Vice Chairs of the NA’s Ethnic Council and Standing Committee, permanent members and other members of the council and committees of the 14th NA.

This is the first time the NA Standing Committee has implemented the authority in line with new regulations of the 2013 Constitution and the Law on the Organisation of the National Assembly in 2014, Hung said.

Responding to queries on supervision work in the time ahead, NA Secretary General Nguyen Hanh Phuc said the NA decided to carry out supervision on the law enforcement in food safety and State administrative apparatus reform in the 2011-2016 period.

The NA’s Committee for Science, technology and Environment will be responsible for supervising environment in the central region, and then report to the NA Standing Committee and the NA, Phuc said.

He also revealed that the NA Office has planned to arrange training programmes for deputies, who joined the NA for the first time, towards improving the quality of lawmakers.
