Vietnam’s contributions to peacekeeping operations appreciated

Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Vietnam, lauded the country’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations at a meeting on September 5.

At the meeting with Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh in Hanoi, Malhotra said UN organisations are ready to help Vietnam’s peacekeepers to improve their skills.

They are also willing to help the country build a long-term strategy for deploying peacekeepers to UN missions and promote its role in UN peacekeeping operations, he added.

Sen. Lt. Gen. Vinh said after sending officers to UN peacekeeping operations, Vietnam is preparing for the deployment of a level-2 field hospital and a military engineering unit, reiterating the Vietnamese Government and army’s commitment to UN peacekeeping activities.

He also partly attributed those positive outcomes to support from UN organisations.

Vietnam wants to join the UNDP and the UN in developing this relationship, the officer noted.
