Vietnam ready to join UN peacekeeping activities

Vietnam is ready to dispatch forces to take part in the UN peacekeeping missions whenever requested, an officer has said.

Senior Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, made the statement at a reception for the Mobile Training Support Team of the UN Integrated Training Service in Hanoi on October 24.

He said with the support from the UN, Vietnam will participate more effectively in peacekeeping activities.

Earlier the same day, the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre along with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operation and Department of Field Support hosted the UN Capacity-Building Pre-Deployment Training Course in English.

The programme, the first of its kind, is scheduled to last until November 4, during which the trainees will learn about professional skills, fundamental training information of the UN, and specialised documents relating to civil and children protection.

Vietnam officially joined the UN peacekeeping activities in 2014. So far, 12 Vietnamese officials have been deployed to do missions at UN operations in South Sudan and Central African Republic.

The country has also dispatched 83 officials to join short-term training courses at the invitation of the UN and in the framework of regional and international cooperation.

Vietnam is actively preparing of the training and purchasing of equipment for the second-level field hospital and a company of sappers to engage in peacekeeping missions when needed.

The nation is also focusing on training female soldiers to serve the UN peacekeeping missions in the coming time.
