Vietnam proactive in UNHRC activities

(VOV) - Vietnam has actively participated in activities of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to run for a non-permanent seat in the council for the 2014-2016 tenure.

The statement was made by ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh, Head of Vietnam’s permanent representative mission to the UN at the 21st session of the UNHRC which closed last weekend in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the session from September 10-28, the UNHRC heard and discussed reports from special working groups and experts in charge of issues related to children in armed conflicts, indigenous people, mercenary, harmful effect of hazardous waste, modern slavery, safe water, poverty, anti-racial discrimination, human rights, international solidarity, democracy and just international order. 

The council also considered reports on the human rights situation in Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Cambodia and adopted the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reports from 14 countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Brazil, South Africa, Algeria and Ecuador.

Ambassador Thanh said Vietnam supports efforts to ensure and exercise human rights in the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia.

At the September 25 dialogue with a special rapporteur on the Cambodia situation, Thanh highlighted the friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Cambodia as well as Cambodia’s achievements in ensuring political stability and boosting economic development to build a Cambodia of peace, stability and development.

During the session, the UNHRC conducted four human rights discussions on Nelson Mandela Day, indigenous people’s legal approach, women’s role and their rights to economic, cultural and social affairs, threat and retaliation against cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms.

The council adopted 31 resolutions, 14 decisions, nominated two special rapporteurs on Belarus, Eritrea, and elected 4 members of the UNHRC Advisory Committee.
