Vietnam, Cuba share legislative experience

Law-makers of Vietnam and Cuba shared legislative experience at a recent conference held during a visit of a Vietnamese National Assembly delegation to the Caribbean island from March 13-19.

At the conference, chaired by Chairman of the Cuban National Assembly Esteban Lazo Hernandez, both sides delved deeply into such subjects as the organisation and performance of the State apparatus including the legislature, the relationship between the legislative body and voters, the organisation of people’s councils and provincial-level NA deputy delegations, and the link between the Party and the NA.

They also discussed each side’s strengths and lessons in national reform and development as well as measures to boost the NA’s role and performance.

Concluding the function, the Cuban NA Chairman spoke highly of Vietnam’s experience in overhauling the State apparatus, particularly the organisation and operation of the NA in making laws and monitoring the government’s work.

These experiences are useful to Cuba during its process to update economic growth model and shake up State agencies, he added.

He called for more information and experience exchange as well as joint studies between the countries’ parliaments, saying that those practical activities will contribute to the comprehensive cooperation and solidarity between the two countries.

Participating delegates from the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) included Head of the NA Ombudsman Committee Nguyen Thanh Hai and Secretary of the NA Chairwoman Le Minh Thong.

While in Cuba, the Vietnamese delegation, led by member of the NA Standing Committee and Head of the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs Tran Van Tuy, is scheduled to visit Mayabeque and Matanzas provinces to study the performance of the local people’s councils and social-economic situation.
