Vietnam, Bangladesh aim for higher trade value

(VOV) - Both countries have set to reach US$1 billion in two-way trade turnover over the next five years.

At their talks on November 2 in Hanoi, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina affirmed their shared determination to lift the relationship between the two countries to a higher level and agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in politics, national security and defence, economics, trade, and investment.

They also urged more cooperation on each of the countries’ particular strengths, including agriculture, aquaculture, information and communication.

The two sides scheduled the second meeting of the Joint Committee for Economic, Commercial, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation and the first political consultation between the two foreign ministries for next year.

PM Dung praised Bangladesh’s achievements in national construction and development, thus improving its regional status and international reputation. The Bangladeshi PM meanwhile expressed her admiration for the Vietnamese people’s courage during their struggle for national independence and unification.

Ms Hasina said she hopes the Vietnamese people will record even greater achievements in the years to come.

The two PMs compared notes on regional and international issues of mutual concern and demonstrated their desire to cooperate closely at international forums like the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS), and the East-West Corridor (EWC).

They agreed to collaborate on promoting international cooperation on global issues such as climate change and food security, maritime freedom preservation, and peaceful dispute resolution.

The occasion also marked Bangladesh’s official recognition of Vietnam’s full market economy with the aim of boosting economic and trade ties as well as deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

PM Hasina invited PM Dung and his wife to visit Bangladesh, an invitation accepted with pleasure and finalized through diplomatic channels at a later date.

In the wake of their talks, the two PMs witnessed the signing of several documents including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on husbandry and aquaculture cooperation, an agreement to extend the MoU on agricultural cooperation, a MoU on trade promotion, and an agreement on establishing a Bangladesh-Vietnam Business Council.
