President welcomes former Soviet Union veterans
(VOV) - President Truong Tan Sang hosted a reception in Hanoi on December 4 welcoming 30 former Soviet Union veterans—from countries including Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus—who helped Vietnam during its national liberation struggle more than 40 years ago.
Delegates recalled memories of fighting side-by-side with Vietnamese soldiers, stressing the service was their noble duty and an honour.
They praised Vietnam’s achievements in its process of national renewal, expressing hopes that the tradition of patriotism and revolutionary heroism nurtured by the veterans, Vietnamese soldiers, and civilian population will inspire and receive the respect of younger generations.
They voiced their desire to contribute to maintaining and improving the relationships between Vietnam and its foreign friends.
Sang thanked the citizens of the countries of the former Soviet Union, including veterans, for the support they lent to Vietnam’s national liberation campaign. He noted his appreciation of the delegation’s timing, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the “Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu in the air” victory. It was a triumphant milestone assisted by the significant contributions of the veterans.
Vietnam’s achievements during its national renewal are inseparable from the veterans’ sacrifices and contributions in the past, Sang said.
Sang voiced faith that the veterans will continue contributing to enhancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
