Young swimmer secures bronze at Asian Champs

(VOV) - Teenage swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has won a bronze medal at the ongoing Asian Swimming Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Vien, 16, came third in the women's 400m medley event on November 16 with a time of 4:48:23, faster than her best efforts at the 2012 London Olympics. It was Vietnam’s first bronze medal at the Asian Championships.

The young swimmer is expected to progress even further over the course of upcoming events including the 2014 ASIAD, the 2016 Olympics, and the 2019 ASIAD hosted by Vietnam.

Dinh Viet Hung, Secretary General of the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association, said that Anh Vien is optimistic about achieving success at regional and international competitions as she continues to train at prestigious centres abroad.

Vien was the only Vietnamese swimming representative who officially qualified for the 2012 Olympics. She won five gold medals at the 2011 Southeast Asian Championships and two silvers at the 2011 SEA Games.
