Writer Le Van Thao, vice president of the Vietnam Writers' Association, has won the ASEAN Literature Award 2006 for his novel entitled "Con giong" (The Squall).

The novel, which was written in the 1980s, describes the lives of people in the southern region during the war. Readers praise the book for its vivid description of Vietnamese people's customs, traits and kind heart.

The writer is expected to leave for Bangkok on October 4 to receive the award.

While in Thailand, Mr Thao, who is also president of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers' Association, will join outstanding writers from 10 other ASEAN member countries to attend the ASEAN Literature Week 2006 on October 4-10.

Many Vietnamese writers and poets have previously been honoured with the award, including To Huu, Nguyen Khai, Ma Van Khang, Huu Thinh, Nguyen Kien, Nguyen Duc Mau, Bang Viet and Do Chu.
