Vietnamese writer Tran Van Tuan received the South East Asia Writers Awards 2007 for his novel “Holy Forest, Pure Water” at a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 12.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Thai Royal Government and ambassadors of ASEAN member countries to Thailand.
On receiving the honour, Mr Tuan said, “All ASEAN countries and the world in general need to understand more through different channels of information, of which cultural exchange is the most effective channel.”
He echoed other awards winners and expressed his wish that literature will help to promote mutual understanding among nations and build an environment of peace and friendship in the region and the world.
Established in 1979, the annual awards aim to honour leading poets and writers from ASEAN member countries. The Vietnam Writers Association joined the organisation in 1996 and has since sent the best works to the awards organising board.
